Juniata competes at Susquehanna Open in final tune-up before Landmark meet
(Posted February 16, 2008)
SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Juniata College men's and women's indoor track and field teams posted three new school records with five performances in the top eight of the meet during competition at the Susquehanna Open, held Saturday, Feb. 16, in Selinsgove, Pa.
The Juniata women were led by sophomore Laura Rupprecht (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) and freshman Stephanie Varner (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) finished seventh in the mile and pole vault, respectively.
In the process, Rupprecht broke her own school record in the mile by just over a second with a time of 5:32.09. She had set the existing record just one week ago. Rupprecht followed that up with a time of 2:31.05 in the 800m race, a time that was good enough to move her into second on the all-time Juniata list in that event and eight seconds shy of the school record.
Varner equaled her own school record in the pole vault with a jump of 2.60 meters (9' 6.25"), matching the mark she had also established one week earlier.
Junior Amy Reynolds (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) moved into fifth on the all time Juniata list in the 200m event as she recorded a time of 28.16, while finishing 21st in the race.
Two of Juniata's women's relay teams also produced strong showings that rank among the top-five all time for Juniata. The 4x400m relay team of senior Caitlin Hinson (Florence, S.C./Danville), freshman Courtney DeGemmis (Lansdale, Pa./Methacton), Reynolds, and sophomore Melissa Johnson (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy) came within a half second of breaking the school record in that event, which was established three years ago. Their time of 4:14.64 was good enough for fifth place in the race and makes them the second fastest ever for Juniata. DeGemmis, Reynolds, and Johnson were joined by junior Kelsey Buffenmyer (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) on the 4x200m relay team that ran 1:53.38 to finish sixth. That time makes them the third fastest relay team ever for Juniata.
Buffenmyer also recorded two individual top-eight finishes in the meet. Her season best long jump of 5.10 meters (16' 8.75") earned her sixth place in the meet. She followed that up with a 1.52 meter (4' 11.75") high jump performance that was good enough for fifth place in the meet.
Two of the four top-five all time performances for the Juniata men came from one event: the weight throw. Senior Tommy Beideman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) broke his own school record in the event by three inches, as he tossed the weight 11.76 meters (38' 7") to finish 18th. He had established the previous record one week earlier. Also in the weight throw, sophomore Jeremy Boback (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) moved into third on the all-time list as he finished 27th with a throw of 10.94 meters (35' 10.75").
Junior Patrick Filamor (Wanchai, Hong Kong/Int'l School of Manila) improved his personal best in the long jump to 6.39 meters (20' 11.75"), which places him fifth on the all-time Juniata list and was good enough for fifth in the meet.
The Juniata men's 4x800m relay team of junior Tripp Rudolph (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), senior Jason Hoover (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), sophomore Matthew Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield-Landisville), and sophomore Sam Williams (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central-Martinsburg) fifth with time of 8:29.82. The time makes them the third fastest quartet ever for Juniata in that event.
The Susquehanna Open was the final competition for the Eagles before the inaugural Landmark Conference Championship, which will be hosted at the same venue next Saturday, Feb. 23. The Eagles will compete with Catholic, Goucher, Moravian, Susquehanna, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy for conference honors.
