Juniata baseball picked second in Landmark preseason poll

MADISON, N.J. -- The Juniata College baseball has been picked to finish second in the 2008 Landmark Conference race, according to preseason voting by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Juniata received four first-place votes and tallied 49 points in the poll. The Eagles finished with a 17-17-1 mark last season, and return the bulk of the 2007 starting lineup.
Headlining the list of Juniata returnees are three-time All-Commonwealth Conference first baseman Dan Kauffman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), and two-time All-Conference pitcher Jason Enoch (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield). Kauffman posted a career-high .343 batting average last season while belting seven home runs with 36 RBI; Enoch notched a 3-5 record last season with a 5.02 ERA over 57-and-a-third innings pitched, while recording a team-high 52 strikeouts. During the 2006 campaign, Enoch finished with an 8-1 record with a 3.51 ERA over 84-and-two-thirds innings, with 60 strikeouts.
Catholic University was picked to win the Landmark Conference with 55 points and six first-place votes. Moravian College garnered 36 points and one first-place vote to finish third in the poll. The Greyhounds were followed by the University of Scranton (31 points), Drew University (24 points), Susquehanna University (24 points), and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (12 points).
Juniata opens its 2008 season under new Head Coach Tom Gibboney on Saturday, March 1, in Ft. Pierce, Fla., against Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
