(Posted March 6, 2008)

FT. PIERCE, Fla. â?" Juniata College suffered a pair of one-run losses during Thursday's games on the Eagles' 2008 spring break trip to Ft. Pierce, Fla., as Juniata dropped 5-4 and 4-3 decisions to the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.). The second game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to thunderstorms that moved into the Ft. Pierce area. In the opening game, Juniata got on the board first with a run in the first inning, but St. Scholastica responded with a grand slam off starter Jason Enoch (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) in the second. The Eagles responded with two runs in the fourth inning, with one run coming across on an Andrew Kriss (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) single. Dan Kauffman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) belted a solo home run in the seventh, the Eagle come-back attempt ended a run short. Kauffman finished the day 2-for-2 with a homer, a double and two walks, while Kevin Small (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) went 2-for-4 at the plate. Enoch allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out eight over seven full innings of work, and was charged with the loss. In game two, Juniata allowed four St. Scholastica runs to cross in the first inning and were never able to catch up before being overtaken by the weather. Most of the Saints' damage in the first inning came off a bases-loaded double that plated three runs. The Eagles scored two runs of their own in the first when Steve Wilk (Blairsville, Pa./Blairsville) triple scored Small and Greg Hoffman (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney). Hoffman went 2-for-2 in the game, including an RBI double that scored Adam Spadafora (Asbury, N.J./Pennington School). Starter Andrew Snyder (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) was charged with the loss, despite lasting only one inning before being lifted in favor of Brian Markovich (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria), after Snyder suffered an arm injury. Juniata will return to action on Wednesday, March 12, when it faces Mt. Aloysius College. -30-
