Juniata baseball takes two from Landmark foe Drew University

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata baseball team brought in 13 runs off 13 hits in the second game to complete the doubleheader sweep over Drew University, in its Landmark Conference home opener on Friday afternoon in Huntingdon, Pa. The Eagles won game one 3-2, and finished the sweep, 13-2 in the second game. Juniata's Tyler Clifford (Homer City, Pa./Homer City) was tabbed with the second win of the day, fanning three batters and allowing eight hits. Drew started off the second game with an RBI off a double from James Soldo, but Juniata answered back with six runs off four hits to complete the first inning. The game was at a scoring standstill until the Eagles continued the damage in the fourth inning when Steve Wilk (Blairsville, Pa./Blairsville) struck a two RBI single to center field and Shawn McDonald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) had a three RBI double to right center, improving the score to 11-1. The Eagles increased their lead to 13-1 in the fifth inning off a two-run homer by Greg Hoffman (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), bringing in Dan Kauffman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor). In game one, Eagle lefty Andrew Snyder (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) allowed only six hits and sent four Rangers back to the bench on strikeouts. The game remained scoreless until an RBI single from Drew's Deonti LaPenta scored Zach Bircks in the third inning. Kevin Small (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and Hoffman each struck an RBI single to bring the Eagles back in the game, tying the contest at 2-2. With the game still tied 2-2 in the fifth, Kauffman sent one over the right field fence to score the winning run. The Rangers attempted to rally in the seventh, but with bases loaded and two outs, Adam Spadafora (Asbury, N.J./Pennington School) made a catch in right center to close the game. Kauffman had a perfect first game at the plate, going 3-for-3, with two singles, one home run and one RBI, while Hoffman completed the second game 4-for-4 at the plate with two singles, one double, one home run, and four RBI. McDonald finished game two 3-for-4, with two singles and a double. The Eagles continue their Landmark Conference series against Drew University on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in Huntingdon, Pa. -30-
