Varner sets new pole vault record and men record four firsts
(Posted March 22, 2008)
TOWSON, Md. -- Juniata College freshman Stephanie Varner (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) set a school record while the men's team claimed four first-place finishes, to highlight Juniata's results at the Towson University Invitational, Saturday afternoon in Towson, Md.
Varner set a new Juniata mark in the pole vault, finishing third in the event at Towson after clearing the bar at 9 ¼. She broke the previous mark of 8-6 ¼, set in 2003 by Stephanie Wasylyk.
The Eagle men captured first place in four events at the Towson meet, led by TJ Breya's (McClure, Pa./East Juniata) individual titles in the 110m hurdles, with a personal best time of 15.85, and the 400m hurdles, where he posted a time of 55.80. Breya's effort in the 110m hurdles was good enough for third on the Juniata all-time performance list.
Senior Matt Booth (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Catholic Central) won the long jump with a leap of 21-11 ¾. Juniata's final first-place finish of the day came in the steeplechase, where Jason Hoover (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) won in a time of 10:09.63.
Several Eagles posted performances that made the top five in school history. Eric Hoover (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) finished fifth in the 1500m run with a time of 4:05.80, and moved into fourth on the all-time rankings. Sam Williams' (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central-Martinsburg) fourth-place time of 15:39.60 in the 5000m was the second-best time in the event in Juniata history. Ryan Baird (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) placed fourth in the pole vault, and moved into fourth place in the all-time performance rankings, by clearing the height of 12-4 ¾, and Matt Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield-Landisville) posted the fourth fastest time in the 5000m run with a time of 15:45.77
In the women's events, sophomore Melissa Johnson (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy) finished sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:07.23, good enough for fourth on the Juniata all-time list, and Megan McQuillan (Severna Park, Md./Seton Keough) moved into third on Juniata's all-time list in the 1500m run with a time of 5:04.39.
