Juniata baseball outlasts Drew in slugfest
(Posted April 25, 2008)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College completed its sweep of Drew University - over a month after the two teams last played - with a 16-10 victory over the Rangers, in Landmark Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Langdon-Goodale Field in Huntingdon, Pa. Friday's game was rescheduled from March 22, when the Eagles (22-9, 14-1 Landmark) were supposed to play the final game of the three-game league series, after an inch of snow blanketed Huntingdon the previous night. Juniata scored in six of the eight innings they were at bat, starting with seven runs in the first inning. The Eagles plated runs in the opening frame on RBI singles by Dan Kauffman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), John Martinez (Mt. Union, Pa./Mt. Union), Andrew Kriss (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll), Adam Spadafora (Asbury, N.J./Pennington School), and Kevin Small (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North). That was all in response to Drew's three-run effort in the top half of the first, when the Rangers plated three runs on three hits including an RBI double by Andrew Baxter. The Eagles added a single run in the second on Shawn McDonald's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Carnevin) double to right field that scored Martinez, with two more runs crossing the plate for Juniata in both the third and fourth innings. Juniata's two runs in the third were courtesy a Greg Hoffman (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) triple to right-center that scored Kauffman and Spadafora. A three-run home run by Martinez in the fifth stretched Juniata's lead to 15-3, before the Rangers began to get back in the ball game. Drew (7-26, 3-12 Landmark) tacked on a single run in the sixth, and added three runs in the seventh on a three-run homer by John Minio. Three more Ranger runs crossed the plate in the eighth inning, with two runs scoring on Daniel Blum's single to left field. Eagle starter Brian Markovich (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) allowed four earned runs on seven hits and one walk over his six complete innings of work for the win, striking out four Ranger batters. Anthony Martini (Homer City, Pa./Homer City) and Marty Hauck (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) both saw action in relief. Drew's Ben Lynch lasted four innings in his starting role, yielding 15 runs on 13 hits with eight walks, and was charged with the loss. The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they host Moravian College in a Landmark Conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. -30-
