Spadafora and Enoch have record-setting day in sweep of Moravian
(Posted April 26, 2008)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Junior Adam Spadafora (Asbury, N.J./Pennington School) provided the runs while starter Jay Enoch (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) managed to keep the Moravian College offense bottled up as Juniata College completed a doubleheader sweep of the Greyhounds with a 4-0 win in game two, Saturday afternoon at Langdon-Goodale Field in Huntingdon, Pa. The Eagles began the afternoon with a 6-1 victory in the first game. Spadafora collected a pair of hits in each game, giving him 63 for the season and setting a new Juniata single-season hits record, eclipsing the old mark of 62 set in 2006 by Troy Beaver. The win was Enoch's 24th career victory on the mound, setting a new school record for career pitching wins. Enoch broke the previous record of 23, held by Kevin Neff (1988-91) and Clint Wevodau (1999-2002). Enoch allowed just two hits - a bloop single to right and a bleeder to shortstop, both in the first inning - while fanning 12 Greyhounds on his way to the complete game victory, boosting his ledger to 8-2 on the season. Coincidentally, Enoch's first career victory also came against Moravian College back in 2005, a 10-3 win over the Greyhounds during a spring break trip to Chandler, Ariz., during which he logged his career high of 15 strikeouts in just six innings of work. Juniata (25-9, 16-1) scored single runs in each of the first four innings on nine hits, while leaving nine runners stranded on base. Steve Wilk (Blairsville, Pa./Blairsville) plated Spadafora, who reached on a lead-off single, with a sacrifice fly to left field in the first inning. Kevin Small (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) scored Andrew Kriss (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) with an RBI single to right in the second, and Wilk got aboard with a single in the third and eventually scored on Dane Ott's (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) single to left. Greg Hoffman (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) capped the Juniata scoring with a one-run triple to right field in the fourth, driving in Spadafora. Moravian starter Trevor Lawrence yielded all four runs on nine hits and three walks and was charged with the loss, dropping his record to 2-2. In the first game, Spadafora's solo home run to center field in the third inning, his first round-tripper of the season, proved to be the game-winning run in a 6-1 victory. The Eagles scored one run in the second inning, when Martinez stroked a two-out single to center field, and was doubled home by Ott. Juniata added two runs in the second, off a sac fly by Ott and an RBI double by Shawn McDonald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Carnevin), and two more in the sixth on Spadafora's two-run double down the right field line. Moravian's (16-21, 8-9 Landmark) only offense came in the second inning, when Brad Bodine had a lead-off single to left-center, and eventually came home on Jon Baltz's single up the middle. Juniata received a complete game pitching performance from lefthander Andrew Snyder (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney), who allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out seven Greyhound batters, and improved his record to 6-2. Moravian ace Christopher Morrison was pounded for six runs, all earned, on 10 hits, while allowing just one walk and sending one Eagle batter back to the dugout on strikeouts. Juniata and Moravian will complete the three-game Landmark Conference series on Sunday, April 27, at 1:00 p.m. on Langdon-Goodale Field. -30-
