HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Ranked 14th in the nation, Juniata College field hockey opened its 2007 season with a loss to the unranked squad from the Stevens Institute of Technology. Yet last year's Juniata team went on to have the most successful season in the history of the program.

That thought will have to be consolation for the 2008 Juniata squad over the next few days as the Eagles, again ranked 14th in Division III, were handed a 1-0 double overtime loss by Stevens on Sunday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J.

Juniata (1-1) was outshot 14-4 over the nearly 87-minute long contest, which finally ended just 1:39 into the second extra period when the Ducks' Hillary Paul fired home a cross from Kara Borzillo to end the match.

Senior Abby Funk (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) played the entire game in the Juniata goal, recording six saves to keep Juniata in the contest. Stevens goalie Ellyn Griggs logged two saves off shots by Kara Buda (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) and Erin Smith (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra). Stevens had an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners during the contest.

Juniata returns to action this Wednesday, Sept. 3, when it travels to Carlisle, Pa., to face Dickinson College. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
