Juniata men's soccer upends McDaniel, 2-1
(Posted September 10, 2008)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Freshman David Grim's (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area) goal in the 32nd minute proved to be the difference maker as Juniata College knocked off McDaniel College 2-1, in men's soccer action Wednesday night on Winton Hill Field in Huntingdon, Pa.
Grim buried a shot past McDaniel keeper Benjamin Knight from about six yards out and into the far side of the goal, one-timing Caleb Davis' (Salt Lake City, Utah/Highland) diagonal cross from approximately 45 yards out.
The goal was redemption for Grim, who earlier in the first half had two opportunities on the McDaniel goal with the keeper caught out of position, but sent shots sailing high and wide on both occasions.
The Eagles opened the scoring with Noah Bowers' (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) penalty kick in the 26th minute, after a Juniata player was hauled down inside the 18-yard box.
Juniata was also responsible for McDaniel's goal in the 44th minute. An Eagle clearing attempt from just in front of the goal line of a Green Terror corner kick was misdirected into the goal.
"This is the kind of game we couldn't win last year - one-goal games we just couldn't win," said Juniata head coach Dan Dubois. "It wasn't ideal giving up a goal on a corner kick right before the end of the half - that's not the way you want to head in - but we had some young guys who got us goals right away."
The Eagles outshot the Green Terror 12-9, with each side claiming four shots on goal. Knight finished with two saves over 90 minutes, while Juniata keeper Ted Sonneborn (Syracuse, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) logged three saves. McDaniel had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, while Juniata was whistled for offsides eight times to McDaniel's one.
"Ted Sonneborn had a great game, after not having his best outing - even though it was a win - last Saturday against Keystone. His communication in the back was outstanding, he made some great saves, and he just played goalkeeper the way we need him to," said Dubois. "He stepped up and played his game today, and the rest of the guys were excited for him."
Juniata will be on the road for its next contest, a matchup against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 1:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
