Juniata field hockey drops sixth straight with loss at Washington & Jefferson
(Posted September 13, 2008)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Juniata College waged a late comeback but could not quite catch Washington & Jefferson College in the waning moments as the Presidents managed a 2-1 win over the Eagles, in field hockey action Saturday afternoon in Washington, Pa.
Juniata (1-6, 0-0 Landmark) pulled to within one of Washington & Jefferson with 8:17 remaining in the game, when Brittany Kauffman (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) scored with an assist going to Meghan McGlone (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh).
The Eagles recorded five penalty corners and four shots at the Presidents' goal over the remaining eight minutes of play, but were unable to find the back of the cage for the game-tying marker. W&J outshot Juniata 15-10 over the course of the game, but the Eagles held a 7-4 advantage in shots in the second half.
W&J scored the game's only first half goal barely ten minutes into the contest, when Kolbey Seidel scored with an assist by Laura Peery.
Peery put the Presidents' up 2-0 with 15:37 left in the game, with an assist going to Hannah Lott. Peery's goal turned out to be the last shot on goal that the Juniata defense would allow over the remainder of the game.
Juniata's Denalyn Spratt (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) saw nearly 62 minutes of action in the Eagle goal, allowing both W&J goals while recording nine saves. Moira Nugent (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) played the remaining eight minutes, but was not challenged to make a single save. The Presidents' Rosilynn Reynoso played all 70 minutes in the W&J cage, recording six saves during the afternoon.
Juniata held a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners over the entire game, with eight of those opportunities coming in the second half. The Presidents recorded just two penalty corners in the second frame.
The Eagles will finally make their 2008 home debut this Tuesday, Sept. 16, when they host York College of Pennsylvania at 4:30 p.m. on Winton Hill Field.
