Masullo named Centennial football Co-Special Teams Player of the Week
(Posted October 6, 2008)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College freshman placekicker Andrew Masullo (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) was named the Centennial Conference Football Co-Special Teams Player of the Week, for his performance in Juniata's 12-10 victory over McDaniel College this past Saturday.
Masullo connected on both of his field goal attempts from 26 yards, accounting for half of Juniata's points in the win. His first 26-yarder - the first field goal of his collegiate career - was at the end of the first quarter, while his second came at the 6:00 mark of the third quarter.
"We thought he was very good as a high school football player, so this was really not a surprise for our program that he has been able to kick like he has," said Juniata head coach Darrell Alt. "He showed some poise, because he's been able to respond to pressure situations when we've tried to ice him in practice, so if he was nervous he wasn't showing it."
Masullo is the first Juniata football player to earn a Centennial Conference player of the week award. He shares Special Teams Player of the Week honors with Muhlenberg College punter David Mazzola, who averaged 44.0 yards on four punts. One was a 55-yarder late in the Mules' 28-23 win over Johns Hopkins, and two more were downed inside the Hopkins five-yard line.
Senior linebacker Josh Roy (Fredericksburg, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and senior quarterback Jay Leonard (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) were both named to the Centennial's Football Honor Roll for the week.
Roy had a team-high 10 total tackles, leading a defensive unit that held McDaniel to just 192 yards of total offense, and forced the Green Terror to go three-and-punt on seven of their 10 possessions.
Leonard completed 15 of 30 pass attempts for 186 yards and rushed seven times for 27 yards including one touchdown to pace the Juniata offense. The rushing TD was Leonard's second of the season, and the fourth of his career.
Juniata (1-4, 1-2 Centennial) will face Muhlenberg College this Saturday in Allentown, Pa. The Mules are ranked fifth in the nation in both the AFCA and the d3football.com polls.
