(Posted October 9, 2008)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Women's volleyball outside hitter Amber Thomas (Ephrata, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and football placekicker Andrew Masullo (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) have been named Juniata College's Athletes of the Week, for the week ending October 5, 2008.
Thomas led the Juniata women's volleyball team to three wins over Landmark foes last weekend, completing a season sweep of the conference and earning the right to host the final two rounds of the Landmark Conference tournament on November 8. Thomas had a high of 11 kills earlier in the week, leading the Eagles to a 3-0 win over St. Vincent College. For the week, Thomas tallied 27 kills on 46 swings, for an incredible .522 attack percentage. She finished the week with eight digs, two blocks solos, and a service ace.
The top-ranked Juniata women's volleyball team (17-1, 6-0 Landmark) are in California this weekend, competing in the University of La Verne's Leopard Invitational. The Eagles will be facing #2 Emory University and #3 La Verne in the tournament, in addition to a talented squad from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Masullo, playing in just his second collegiate game, nailed a pair of 26-yard field goals to account for half of Juniata's points in a 12-10 win over McDaniel College last Saturday. Masullo also won Centennial Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors, becoming the first Juniata player to win a Centennial Conference weekly award.
The Eagle football team will face perhaps its toughest challenge of the season, as Juniata travels to Allentown, Pa., to face Muhlenberg College. The Mules are currently ranked fifth in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and d3football.com polls.
