(Posted March 12, 2002)
Huntingdon, PA ? Senior Juniata College student-athlete and women?s volleyball standout Brandy Workinger (Dallastown/York), who will graduate this coming May with a degree in accounting, has been awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school of her choice.
The $5,000 scholarship was awarded to 58 student-athletes (Division I through Division III) -- 29 men and 29 women -- who participated fall sports which included men?s and women?s cross country, field hockey, football, women?s volleyball, men?s and women?s soccer and men?s water polo. Student-athletes that received the award had to maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point-average (on a 4.00 scale) and perform with distinction in varsity competition. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
A total of nine athletes were picked from women?s volleyball this year and only three were members of Division III institutions.
Workinger, who was an outside hitter, becomes the second Juniata volleyball player in three years to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Kristin Hershey ?00, who is also a native of York, Pennsylvania, earned the honors following the 1999-00 school year and is now studying communications at Syracuse University, while working as a graduate assistant for the women?s volleyball program in Central New York State.
Workinger, who was a two-time first-team American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-American, was the Commonwealth Conference Most Valuable Player in 2000 and the conference's player of the week two times this past fall. In addition, she was the AVCA/Sports Imports Division III national player of the week once during the 2001 season. Workinger posted 20-or-more kills in a match three times this season, including a campaign-high 25 against California (Pa.) on September 7. For the year, she finished third in the conference in kills per game and sixth digs an outing. Workinger averaged 3.66 kills and a team-high 3.83 digs per game this fall. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Washington (Mo.) National Invitational and she was the most valuable player at the Mercyhurst tournament. She was also a two-time all-conference all star, a three-time all-conference academic pick and a two-time Mid-Atlantic Region choice during her volleyball tenure.
Workinger ended her Juniata career ranked fourth in kills (1,736) and hitting attempts (4,186) on the Eagle charts. In addition, she placed second in all-time digs on College Hill (1,786).
Juniata posted a combined overall record of 137-28 (.830) during the four years that Workinger was a member of the blue and gold unit. In addition, the Eagles placed third in the NCAA Division III championship this past fall and took fourth in the nation three times.
