Juniata Orchestra to Perform Full Program of Classical Music

-HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Orchestra will perform one of the most beloved compositions in classical music, Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5," as part of its fall concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.
Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and free for children under age 18 and for Juniata students with current identification. The concert will be conducted by James Latten, associate professor of music at Juniata.

The concert will open with the famous Fifth Symphony, renowned for its thundering introduction. The symphony is one of the most recorded compositions in classical music and has been used in countless, films and television shows.
"Juniata's string program, now a full sized orchestra, has grown in excellence and size, exponentially beyond what any of us expected would be possible, says Debbie Trudeau, music director and lecturer in music at Juniata. "It is truly a fine collegiate orchestra, and it's a joy to work with these performers."
After the Beethoven piece, the concert will downsize for the college's cello choir, performing "French Folk Song." "Rigadoon" and a selection from Moussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." The cello choir is led by Evelyn Bookhammer, a lecturer in music at Juniata.
The orchestra will return to play "Concerto for Clarinet, Movement 1" by Wolfgang Mozart. The soloist for the piece is clarinetist Steven Schmitt, a sophomore from New Providence, Pa. Schmitt was co-winner of the 2008-2009 Juniata Concerto Competition.
The concert will conclude with two compositions, "Troika," from "Lt. Kije Suite" by Sergei Prokofiev, and "Farandole" from "L'Arlesienne," by Georges Bizet.
