(Posted December 4, 2008)
WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Juniata College women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped with a 66-58 loss at McDaniel College, Thursday evening in Westminster, Md.
Senior forward Kelly Ashcraft (Bellefonte, Pa./State College Area) led the Eagles with 13 points, while senior guard Claudia McDowell (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) added 12 points while dishing out seven assists. Sophomore forward Jen Hnatuck (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) logged a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Juniata (3-4) held a 36-31 lead at the intermission, after an impressive shooting performance over the opening 20 minutes. The Eagles shot 51.7% (15-29) from the floor, including a 4-of-10 from beyond the three-point line. Defensively, Juniata held McDaniel to just 40.6% shooting in the first half.
The second half was a completely different story for the Eagles, who shot at just a 24.1% (7-29) clip from the field.
McDaniel's Kim Staub cut the five-point Juniata lead down to three points with a layup 48 seconds into the second stanza. However that would be the last bucket for either team until Kelly Rotan's (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) layup at the 15:10 mark.
The Eagles managed to hang onto the lead until they were overtaken by the Green Terror on Sally Grace's layup with 9:52 remaining, tying the game at 42-42. The game was tied once more at 44-44 on a pair of free throws by Ashton Bankos (York, Pa./York Catholic), but McDaniel retook the lead with a jumper in the paint by Ali Moreland with 8:25 left in the game.
Moreland's bucket launched a 14-2 run for the Green Terror, with ended with Emma Adams' free throws to make the score 58-46 with just 3:18 remaining. After a Hnatuck layup briefly cut the McDaniel lead to 58-48, Adams answered with back-to-back layups to give the Green Terror its widest lead at 14 points, 62-48, with 2:34 showing.
Moreland finished with a game-high 20 points for the Green Terror, while Whitney Snoops tallied 18 points
Juniata will go back into action on Saturday, Dec. 6, when it travels to Selinsgrove, Pa., to face Landmark Conference-rival Susquehanna University.
