Men's hoops stages second-half comeback vs. Catholic, but comes up short

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College pulled to within three points of Catholic University late in the second half, before the Cardinals pulled away to secure a 65-48 win over the Eagles, in Landmark Conference men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Juniata's Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center.
Trailing 48-36 with 11:12 remaining in the second half, Juniata (3-15, 1-6 Landmark) went on a 9-0 run that was capped by Dan Sekulski's (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone Area) layup with 5:16 showing. Jeff Berkey (Stoystown, Pa./Shanksville-Stonycreek) accounted for five points in the run with a three-pointer and a layup.
With their lead reduced to 48-45, Catholic (14-4, 5-2 Landmark) answered with a Jason Banzhaf layup and a pair of foul shots by R.J. Dixon. The Cardinals held Juniata scoreless over the final two-and-a-half minutes to keep the Eagles in check and escape Huntingdon with the conference victory.
Juniata committed 22 turnovers, the most for the Eagles over their last seven games, which yielded 16 points for Catholic.
David Thompson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) led the Eagles with 13 points, while Berkey chipped in with 10 points. Ryan Jones (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) logged seven points and 10 rebounds in the first half alone, but was held scoreless in the second half to finish with seven points and 12 boards.
Catholic's Jason Banzhaf tallied 21 points and nine rebounds, while Clark Hinderlang added 12 points to the Cardinals' cause.
Juniata remains at home for its next game on Friday, Jan. 30, when it hosts the University of Scranton.
