Eagle women's tennis picked fifth in Landmark poll

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College women's tennis squad has been tapped to finish fifth among the league's seven schools, in preseason voting of the league's head coaches and sports information directors which was released Thursday.
Juniata, which returns one All-Landmark Conference selection in first team honoree Maggie Wolenter (Audubon, N.J./Audubon), garnered 21 points in the poll.
Moravian College captured first place in the voting with 53 points, ahead of the University of Scranton with 50 points. Catholic University was third with 42 points, while Goucher College was fourth and tallied 34 points.
Trailing the Eagles were Susquehanna University (18 points), followed by Drew University (13 points).
Juniata went 4-14 in 2007-08, 1-5 in Landmark Conference matches. The Eagles return three top performers from last season in junior Amanda Fontana (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity), who was 4-9 at #1 singles; sophomore Lauren Perow (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon), who was 4-14 overall playing mostly at #3 singles; and Wolenter, who was 4-8 at #2 singles and 3-2 at #1 singles.
The Eagles went 2-2 during their fall slate, with wins over Frostburg State and Penn State-Harrisburg. Juniata begins spring competition on Monday, Mar. 9, against Trine University, during the team's spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.
