(Posted March 10, 2009)
HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Juniata College took Eastern Nazarene College (Mass.) into extra games on all three doubles matches, and then battled in some exceedingly close singles contests before finally falling to the Crusaders, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon in Hilton Head, S.C.
All three doubles matches finished with 9-7 scores, with the Eagles coming away victorious at no. 2 doubles with the pairing of Ryan Navarro (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) and Casey Chew (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville). Chew was also a winner at no. 3 singles, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over ENC's Jack Sahlman.
Chew's singles win was a blow-out compared to the battles waged at no. 2 and no. 4 singles.
Juniata's Aaron Rhodes (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) required a tiebreak in the second set and a third tiebreaker set before winning his no. 2 singles match, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 10-2. At no. 4 singles, Eagle freshman Ross Imbrie (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) took his opponent, the Crusaders' Tyler Restrick, into a second set tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 7-6 (13-11).
Sophomore Acer Van Wallendael (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) was Juniata's fourth winner on the day, taking his no. 6 singles match, 6-4, 6-3, over Eastern Nazarene's Jordan Corbin.
Juniata (4-2) returns to action Wednesday night, when it faces Emory & Henry College (Va.) at 6:30 p.m. in Hilton Head.
