MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Juniata College softball team fell to Division II University of Charleston (W.Va.) 10-2 in the opener, but bounced back to take game two off Keystone College, 9-0, to take a split out of Wednesday's doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Juniata (4-2) traded two-run first innings with Charleston in the first contest of the day. Both Eagle runs in the first came home on Rachel Nagy's (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) ground ball to short, which resulted in a Charleston error by the shortstop.
Charleston took the lead in the top of the second on Megan Ferreira's RBI double, with a second run crossing the plate on Jana Salisbury's single. The Charleston Golden Eagles plated four more runs in the fourth inning, off a one-run double by Kathy Jo Getz and a three-run home run off the bat of Michelle Lee.
Juniata's Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits over her three-and-two-thirds innings of work, and evened her record at 2-2 with the loss.
In game two, Juniata senior Pam Mansell (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) scattered two hits with two strikeouts on her way to a complete game victory over Keystone.
Meanwhile, the Eagle hitters took advantage of the 15 walks issued by Keystone starter Lori-Ann Marino, and scored their nine runs on only four hits.
The Eagles scored all the offense they would need on Caley McCool's (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) two-run double, scoring Stacy Nagy (Millerton, Pa./Troy) and Tara Carl (Duke Center, Pa./Otto-Eldred). Carl singled home one of Juniata's two runs in the second inning; Denalyn Spratt (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) crossed the plate earlier in that frame when she scored from third on Keystone's unsuccessful attempt to throw out Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) on a steal of second base.
Juniata is now 4-2 on its spring break trip, and will wrap up the trip on Thursday against Wentworth Institute of Technology and LaRoche College.
