BASEBALL (9-10, 3-5 Commonwealth): Apr. 2 at Pitt-Johnstown (2); Apr. 4 at Widener; Apr. 6, Widener (2).
Juniata opened the home portion of the 2002 schedule with a 12-4 loss to Elizabethtown in Commonwealth Conference action on Friday. Senior first baseman Tim Dobson (Millville/Millville, NJ) was 3 for 5 for the Eagles. He scored twice and had two RBI as well. Dobson launched an opposite field home run (left field) with two outs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. Senior center fielder Lucas Kelleher (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) was 2 for 4, including a triple in the ninth inning, and scored a pair of runs, while freshman third baseman Adrian Huber (Middletown/Middletown) was 2 for 3. On Saturday, the Eagles journeyed to Elizabethtown and completed the three-game series with a split in a doubleheader. Juniata came back to win the first game, 5-4, but dropped the second tilt, 9-6. In the opener, the Eagles scored five runs in the top of the sixth to come back from a 4-0 deficit. Senior pitcher Clint Wevodau (Northern Lebanon/Annville) went the distance on the mound and moved to 4-1 on the year. He allowed nine hits, four earned runs, walked two and struck out three. Dobson was 1 for 3 with one run scored and one RBI. His solo home run to start the sixth inning moved him into first place on the all-time RBI list at Juniata with 109 (breaking the former standard of 108 owned by Jason Evans '99). Sophomore center fielder Kodi Hockenberry (Red Land/Lewisberry) was 1 for 3 with two RBI, while Huber was 1 for 3 with an RBI and scored a run. During the second tilt, junior second baseman Chad Moyer (Red Lion/Red Lion) was 3 for 3 with two RBI, while Kelleher went 2 for 3, including a triple, and scored three of Juniata's six runs in the game. Senior catcher Matt Slagel (Spring Grove/Spring Grove) was 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Dobson added two more RBI to his totals as well.

SOFTBALL (6-6, 1-1 Commonwealth): Apr. 2 at Gettysburg (2); Apr. 4 at Dickinson (2).
The Eagles split a pair of doubleheaders during a four-game week. On Wednesday, Juniata traveled to Penn State-Altoona and won the first game, 9-1, before losing the second, 2-0. In the opener, senior pitcher Christie Matthews (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) went the distance. She allowed just five hits, one earned run, struck out one and did not walk a batter. Offensively, sophomore first baseman Becky Herr (Hamburg/Hamburg) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman second baseman Allison D'Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) went 1 for 2 and plated two runners, while sophomore center fielder Amber Helsel (Claysburg-Kimmel/Claysburg) was 1 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. In the second game, Juniata was held to just five hits, including two from sophomore third baseman Cassandra Dutzer (Danville/Riverside), who was 2 for 3. On Thursday, the Eagles journeyed to Bethany and lost the first tilt, 8-0, but came back to win the closer, 5-3. Juniata had just two hits in the initial outing as sophomore catcher Sarah Patterson (Danville/Danville) was 1 for 2 with a double and D'Ambrosia was 1 for 2. During the second game, Matthews tossed a complete game to get the victory. She improved to 5-2 on the year, while scattering eight hits and allowing two earned runs and two walks. Senior shortstop Brandy Preslovich (Bald Eagle Area/Moshannon) was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Dutzer was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Patterson went 2 for 4 and scored twice, while Helsel was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (8-11, 5-8 EIVA Tait): Apr. 2, Penn State; Apr. 6-7, EIVA Div. III Champ. at TBA
The Eagles suffered through a disappointing 0-3 week during the past seven days. On Tuesday, Juniata dropped a 30-25, 30-27, 30-21 decision at St. Francis (Pa.) in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tait Division play. The loss snapped a 19-match winning streak for the blue and gold against the Red Flash. Sophomore outside hitter Ryan Genova (Antietam/Reading) had 11 kills and three aces. Sophomore opposite Javier Garcia (San Ignacio/Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) registered 11 kills, two digs and one block, while junior outside hitter Neil Lukas (Fairport/Fairport, NY) posted 11 kills and three digs. Junior setter Scott Kofmehl (North Allegheny/Pittsburgh) had 34 assists. On Friday, the Eagles lost at Princeton, 30-25, 30-11, 30-27, in another EIVA Tait showing. Junior middle hitter Luke Manion (North Allegheny/Pittsburgh) had 11 kills, three blocks and one dig, while sophomore middle hitter Kenny Eiser (Central Bucks West/Doylestown) recorded seven kills, four digs, three aces and two blocks. Kofmehl distributed 24 assists and had six digs. Juniata completed the week with a 30-24, 25-30, 30-27, 28-30, 15-12 loss at Division III rival New York University. The Eagles were ranked third in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Poll, while the Violets owned the second spot. Garcia had 20 kills, four digs and two aces. Lukas registered 14 kills, two rejections and one dig, while Genova had 11 kills, seven digs, one block and one assist. Kofmehl handed out 50 assists, while recording six kills, five digs and five blocks.

MEN'S TENNIS (1-4, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth): Apr. 1, Albright; Apr. 3, Penn State-Altoona;
Apr. 6 at Leb. Valley.
Juniata played host to Messiah on Wednesday and dropped a 7-0 count to the Falcons in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth League action.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD: Apr. 6, Blue & Gold Invitational.
The Eagles opened the 2002 campaign at the Susquehanna Invitational, which was a non-scoring event for the team's involved on Saturday. Junior Dusty Lehr (Bermudian Springs/New Oxford) led the Juniata effort on the day by taking first in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.88) and he was second in the pole vault (14'). His time of 14.86 in the trials of the 110-meter hurdles is an NCAA Division III championship provisional qualifying effort. Freshman Ben Beas (Kiski Prep/Johnstown) placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (58.24), while sophomore Jimmie Gray (Frederick/Frederick, MD) took fifth in the 100- (11.43) and 200-meter (22.98) dashes. Senior Ashley Mort (Blue Mountain/Orwisburg) was sixth in the 100 meters (11.51) and was seventh in the 200-meter run (23.22). Junior Nick Wolfe (McConnellsburg/McConnellsburg) placed sixth in the 400 meters (51.39), while freshman Jeremy Weber (Garden Spot/Mohnton) was sixth in the long jump (21' 2 ½"). In relay action, the 4x100-meter squad placed third (43.72), while the 4x400-meter unit was fifth (3:27.95).

Juniata started the 2002 season at the non-team scoring Susquehanna Invitational on Saturday. The Eagles got their top showing from senior Jenni Anderson (Dubuque/Dubuque, IA), who took fourth place in the javelin with a toss of 119' 2"). Sophomore Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) earned the seventh spot in the 400 meters (1:02.64).
