(Posted April 4, 2009)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College softball team was held to a combined seven hits over two games as the Eagles were swept by Moravian College, 2-0 and 6-0, in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Weis Field.
Juniata (13-7, 2-2 Landmark) held Moravian (21-7, 4-0 Landmark) in check for much of game one, before allowing the game-winning runs to cross in the top of the seventh inning.
The Greyhounds' Deanna Mangieri led off the seventh with a single into shallow left field, and was promptly replaced at first base by pinch runner Katie Flood. Maura Agnew singled into right field, moving Flood to third, and Stephanie Falzarano plated Flood with another single. Olivia Evanko flied out to center field, scoring Agnew on a sacrifice.
Liz Schmitt (Knoxville, Tenn./H. Frank Carey, N.Y.) and Caley McCool (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) had the only two hits of the afternoon, both singles.
Eagle starter Alyss Erb (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) allowed seven hits while striking out six in the complete game effort.
Moravian's Maria DeBonis also had a complete game effort in the win, allowing just two hits while fanning nine Eagle batters.
In game two, Moravian broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, off a pair of RBI doubles by Mangieri and Erica Klepeisz. Two more Greyhound runs crossed in the sixth on a two-run home run by Klepeisz, and doubles by DeBonis and Sheri Bieniek forced in two more runs in the seventh.
Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Stacy Nagy (Millerton, Pa./Troy) each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Eagles.
Eagle starter Pam Heinrichs (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) allowed 11 hits to the Greyhounds, and took her first loss of the season to fall to 4-1. Moravian's Jenna Cameron yielded five hits to the Eagles while striking two, and picked up the complete game win.
Juniata will host the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 5, starting at 2:30 p.m.
