HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College senior Tara Carl (Duke Center, Pa. / Otto-Eldred) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District softball squad as a Third team selection, it was announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Carl has started all 37 games this season for the Eagles at third base, and she is third on the team in batting, fourth in the Landmark Conference, with a .407 average. She also leads Juniata with 38 runs scored, and ranks third among team RBI leaders with 19. Carl earned First team All-Landmark Conference honors earlier this week.
Academically, Carl is studying earth and space science at Juniata.
Carl is the third Juniata student-athlete to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors this season; women' volleyball athletes Amber Thomas (Ephrata, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and Beth Kozak (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon, Pa.) were named to the first team and third team squads respectively in women's volleyball.
Juniata (24-13, 8-4 Landmark) is coming off its first conference tournament appearance since 2004, with its berth in the 2009 Landmark Conference Softball Tournament. The Eagles earned the top seed and the right to host the ECAC Division III South Region Softball Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, May 9-10, in Huntingdon. Juniata will face Misericordia University in its opening round game.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams are voted upon by the CoSIDA membership in the appropriate district. College Division District II comprises all NCAA Division II and III, NAIA, and two-year colleges in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. First team all-district selections from all seven CoSIDA districts are considered for the Academic All-America teams.
Initial nomination criteria includes being a varsity starter or key reserve, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, and have sophomore or higher athletic and academic standing at their current institution.
