HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Four Juniata College women's tennis players were named to All-Landmark Conference teams while head coach Beth Bleil was named the league's Coach of the Year, when the conference announced its post-season honors list in women's tennis.
Junior Amanda Fontana (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and freshman Katie Healy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) were First Team Singles selections, while junior Maggie Wolenter (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) was a Second Team Doubles honoree.
Fontana posted a 10-10 overall singles record this season, with a 10-8 mark at no. 1 singles and a 3-3 conference record. Healy was Juniata's top singles performer by record with her 14-3 mark, including an 11-3 ledger at no. 2 singles and a 5-1 Landmark record. Wolenter notched a 14-6 overall singles record in 2008-09, with a 5-1 Landmark record and a 10-5 mark at no. 3 singles.
Wolenter and senior Caroline Weisser (York, Pa./York Suburban) were named to the Second Team Doubles squad, for their 10-3 doubles record this season. The tandem had an 8-3 mark in dual matches, and went a perfect 4-0 against Landmark competition.
The Juniata coaching staff, led by head coach Beth Bleil with assistant coach Brandon Long, were named the league's Women's Tennis Coaching Staff of the Year.
"I am very happy for our players who were recognized individually by the Landmark Conference coaches. They belong among the best of their peers," said Juniata head coach Beth Bleil. "Amanda had a standout year competing at number one singles. Katie arguably was a strong contender for rookie of the year and dominated the number two singles position. Maggie and Caroline went undefeated in the regular season in conference play."
"I also applaud our whole team because it was the contribution of everyone that helped to shine the light on our awardees, including myself and Brandon. This is just the cherry on top for an already awesome record-setting season," said Bleil.
Juniata completed the season with a 13-6 record, just the second 10-win season in program history and setting a new record for most wins in a season. The Eagles posted a 5-1 mark in Landmark play, earning the number two seed for the Landmark Conference Tournament, and hosting Goucher College in a semifinal match.
