(Posted July 2, 2009)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College senior Kelsey Buffenmyer (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) has been named the Landmark Conference's Women's Indoor Track and Field Senior Scholar Athlete for 2008-09.
A two-time NCAA qualifier as a member of the Juniata track and field team, Buffenmyer completed her career having never lost a high jump competition in a conference championship meet. She qualified for the NCAA championships in 2007, when she finished 12th in the high jump, and again in 2009 when she placed 10th. She also qualified for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the long jump, where she finished 12th.
Buffenmyer earned Field Athlete of the Year honors at the 2008 Landmark Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Over her four years at Juniata, she earned a total of 162.25 points for the Eagles at conference track and field championships - the most of any track and field performer under the tutelage of head coach Jon Cutright. She also earned Rookie of the Year honors at both the 2006 Middle Atlantic Conference indoor and outdoor track championships.
Academically, she was named to the Dean's List every semester she was a student at Juniata, and was named to the 2007-08 Landmark Conference Winter All-Academic Team. Buffenmyer was a six-time selection to the MAC and Landmark Conference academic honor rolls. She graduated from Juniata on May 16, 2009, with a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in human resource management and Spanish-Hispanic cultures.
The Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athletes are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors and sports information directors, choosing one senior from each of the sports sponsored by the conference. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on their accomplishments in all areas of college life including athletics, academics and other extracurricular activities. It is the most exclusive award given out by the conference with just 20 honorees for each academic year.
Buffenmyer is the second Juniata student-athlete to be honored as a Landmark Conference Senior Scholar Athlete.
Members of the Landmark Conference are Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata, Moravian College, Susquehanna University, Catholic University of America, University of Scranton, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
