Second half goal stuns no. 18 Eagles in field hockey
(Posted October 12, 2009)
READING, Pa. - A nine game winning streak came to a screeching halt Monday evening when the Juniata College field hockey team traveled to Reading, Pa., to take on Alvernia University in non-conference action. The Crusaders scored an early second half goal and that was more than enough for Alvernia's defense as they beat the Eagles, 1-0.
Sarah George's goal in the 41st minute ended the Eagle's streak as the two teams played under the lights on a chilly October night. Abby Eby and the Crusader defense shut down the potent Juniata offense that was averaging over three goals a game coming into tonight's matchup. Eby saved six shots in 70 minutes of action for the shutout.
Denalyn Spratt (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) stopped three shots, playing all 70 minutes. Meghan McGlone (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) recorded another defensive save, totaling ten on the season.
Juniata (11-3) outshot the Crusaders 13-8 but was unable to find the back of the cage. Alvernia (8-6) had one more penalty corner than the Eagles. The final tally in corners was 5-4.
The team returns to Landmark Conference action when it takes on Drew University on Saturday, Oct. 17, in Madison, N.J. Game time is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
