Volleyball Player Kofmehl Named Verizon Academic All-America

Huntingdon, PA - Scott Kofmehl (North Allegheny/Pittsburgh), a junior setter on the men's volleyball team at Juniata College was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America District II Spring At-Large Team in the College Division. It is the first time in his career that he has received the honor and he will now be placed on the national College Division Academic All-America ballot. The Verizon Academic All-America team is scheduled to be announced on June 11. The team is selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The District II College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
Kofmehl averaged 11.11 assists per game and had 56 kills, a .330 hitting percentage, 11 aces, 85 digs and 44 total blocks this past season. He was the team captain for the second straight year and earned Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) academic honors for the second time in his career. He had 50-or-more assists in a match six times this spring, including a career-best 72 during a five-game outing against Princeton on February 8.
Off of the volleyball court, he is the president of student government and the Model United Nations and World Affairs Association. Kofmehl is a leader of Fellowship for Christian Athletes, a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council and the Spanish Club and he is a Big Brother/Big Sister volunteer. He has earned a spot on the Dean's List five times, has studied in Cuba, Mexico and Germany, has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and earned the 2001 Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation/State Department Pickering Fellow.
Kofmehl has a 3.88 grade-point average as an International Political Economy major on College Hill.
Juniata ended the year with a 9-14 overall record and a 5-9 record in the EIVA Tait Division. The Eagles earned a berth in the EIVA Division I and Division III championships this spring. Juniata was ranked as high as third nationally this year among Division III programs.
