HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Caitlyn Bowman, a sophomore studying biology from Seven Valleys, Pa., received the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship. She is one of 100 undergraduates awarded the scholarship nationwide.

Bowman, the daughter of Raymond and Kathy Bowman of Seven Valleys, will receive $8,000 in scholarship funds for the next two years and receive a full-time paid internship worth $6,500 at NOAA in summer 2011. This summer she will attend a NOAA conference in Silver Spring, Md., to determine the research area for his internship.

Bowman also plays viola in the Juniata College Orchestra and recently played in concert with the Altoona Symphony Orchestra in April.

She is a 2008 graduate of Dallastown Area High School.

Bowman has had an extensive research experience during her short time at Juniata. Since her freshman year, she has worked with Diane Nutbrown, assistant professor of chemistry, on developing fluorescent sensing techniques for ethylene (gas) detection. In summer 2009, Bowman was a von Liebig Research Assistant with Nutbrown on the project. This summer, Bowman will work with Nutbrown at the University of Wisconsin as part of the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates program.

She also has presented her research at professional meetings, including the 2009 Landmark Liberal Arts Research Symposium at Susquehanna University. She also presented a poster on her ethylene research at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco, Calif., in March.

Bowman is also active on campus. She is a starting member of Juniata's field hockey team, playing since her freshman year. She also plays viola in the Juniata College Orchestra and recently played in concert with the Altoona Symphony Orchestra in April.
Bowman also was recently named to Tri-Beta, the national biology honor society and is a member of the Chemistry Club. She was named to the Landmark Conference All-Academic Team for Fall 2009 and serves as a lab assistant for biology for Science in Motion, Juniata's science outreach program.

The Hollings scholarship program is designed to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities, as well as increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere. The agency also believes the scholarship will help recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies or as teachers and educators.
