HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Three Juniata College student-athletes have earned Landmark Conference of the Week honors after their strong performances last week in the Landmark Conference playoffs.
Shauna Deschenes (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) and Joyce Eveleth (State College, Pa./State College) were named Landmark field hockey's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week respectively, while Kelsey Fuller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) was named Women's Volleyball Player of the Week.
Deschenes, a junior forward/midfielder, has been a consistent contributor for Juniata's offense with her 10 goals and eight assists on the season.
On Saturday, Deschenes provided two of the three goals Juniata needed to claim the Landmark Conference Field Hockey Championship. She opened the scoring with a goal late in the first half, and then scored what proved to be the winning goal on a penalty stroke in the second half, as Juniata earned a 3-2 win over Catholic to clinch the title. It was her second multi-goal match of the season.
Defensive play often isn't as quantifiable as offensive play, but Eveleth's efforts did not go unnoticed as she anchored the Juniata defense to defeat Catholic and advance to the NCAA tournament. The senior helped the Eagles blank Drew in the semifinals, holding the visitors to just four shots in a 1-0 win. In the finals, she contributed to a Juniata defense that held off a late Catholic rally in a 3-2 victory.
The Eagles claimed their fourth-straight Landmark title, earning the right to advance to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship. Juniata will travel to play the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in the first round of the tournament.
Fuller, a sophomore right side hitter for Juniata women's volleyball, earned Landmark Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. She logged two strong outings in the Landmark Conference tournamnent that helped the Eagles claim their 30th consecutive conference championship.
Fuller had eight kills with just one error in the championship match win over Susquehanna, which came after an 11-kill performance in the semifinals against Moravian. She hit .457 over the two matches, with 19 kills and only three errors in the two contests. Fuller also added 14 digs to go with four aces and a pair of blocks.
With the Landmark Championship, Juniata women's volleyball team earned a berth in the NCAA tournament for the 30th straight year. The Eagles earned the top seed in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional to be played at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md., and will face Cabrini College in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
