Juniata women's basketball to host "Pink Zone" breast cancer awareness night
(Posted February 8, 2011)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College women's basketball team will host its annual "Pink Zone" match at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, in the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center against Moravian College.
The team will be raising money for the Alliance For Breast Cancer at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and overall awareness for breast cancer by hosting various fundraising activities throughout the night.
The women's basketball team's efforts begin by selling pink t-shirts for $10.00 dollars at Friday night's match. Proceeds will directly benefit the Alliance For Breast Cancer at J.C. Blair.
On the mezzanine there will be several fundraising and awareness activities. Enter the 50/50 raffle to win a basket full of gift certificates and sports merchandise donated by local businesses. Be sure to stop by the informational tables for breast cancer education and to donate to the Alliance For Breast Cancer at J.C. Blair.
The Alliance for Breast Care was formed at J.C. Blair after receiving a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pittsburgh Affiliate during March of 2009. The two main goals of the ABC are to help educate the women of Huntingdon County about breast cancer by distributing resources and holding educational events for groups and organizations. The ABC also holds screening events for women, including mammograms.
Juniata women's basketball has hosted smaller versions of the "Pink Zone" event in previous years, yet this is the first season the team is raising money for the cause.
"It is an important cause to recognize, yet it is even more important to actually raise money," said head coach Danny Young about breast cancer.
The Juniata women's basketball team engaged in community outreach this fall when J.C. Blair hosted a four-day health screening for uninsured women.
"The girls guided patients throughout the day to their different screenings and helped out wherever they could. It was really nice to sit down and talk with the patients from all walks of life," added Young.
