HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Not many college students get the chance to be the focus of an art exhibit, but Juniata College artists studying fine arts, photography and ceramics will exhibit in a variety of media -- paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics and computer art -- at the Juniata College Museum of Art from Thursday, Feb. 24 to April 2.

There is an opening reception at the museum from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24. The reception and continuing exhibition is free and open to the public.

"Student shows celebrate our young artists while giving them the opportunity to show their work in a professional setting."

Jennifer Streb, assistant professor of art

The exhibit will showcase a wide-ranging selection of artworks made by Juniata students during the 2010-2011 academic year. The works on display were created in art classes supervised by Monika Malewska, assistant professor of art, Bethany Benson, assistant professor of art, and Patricia Howard, assistant professor of art.

"Student shows celebrate our young artists while giving them the opportunity to show their work in a professional setting," says Jennifer Streb, assistant professor of art history and curator of the museum. "Exhibiting and curating a museum show is an invaluable part of any art education. The Juniata College Museum of Art is once again thrilled to host the annual student show, and also recognize the efforts and dedication of our art faculty."

The pieces selected from the show go through several rounds of judging. The fine art faculty selects the best work from their respective classes. The next round of selections is made by Juniata students who are enrolled in the museum studies practicum course, where students learn how to curate art shows and other administrative skills. This year, an independent juror will select three artworks and "best in show" and two "honorable mentions." Marshall Price, curator of modern and contemporary art at the National Academy Museum in New York, N.Y., is this year's independent juror.

The museum is located in historic Carnegie Hall at 17th and Moore streets in Huntingdon. Museum hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, please call the museum at (814) 641-3505, or visit the Juniata College Web site at http://www.juniata.edu/museum.
