NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Juniata College softball opened its 2011 slate with a 10-1 loss in five innings to Chatham University, Monday afternoon at Central Park Fields.

Juniata scored its lone run in the third when Steph Frith crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Chatham had a five-run fifth innings aided by two-run triples off the bats of Alexandra Miklos and Elise Zavadak.

Caley McCool (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) and Kelsea Decker (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) logged hits for Juniata. Starter Meghan Decker (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) struck out three but allowed five runs on three hits to take the loss.

In game two, Illinois College scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth on its way to a 13-5 win over Juniata.

A Melissa Moffat (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside) RBI double to left center plated one of two Juniata runs in the first inning. Moffat's two-run blast to left field in the third scored two more runs.

Illinois' fifth inning uprising was fueled by Anna Jacobs's three-run double to left-center, and the game ended when Jacobs scored on a wild pitch.

Moffat went 2-for-3 in game two, while McCool, Amanda Gerlach (Mesa, Ariz./Marcos de Niza), Kelsey Shutt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), and Kelsea Decker each had singles. Rachel Smith (Martinsburg, Pa.) started in the circle for Juniata, and was charged with 11 earned runs on eight hits in the loss.

Juniata resumes its spring break schedule on Tuesday when it faces LaRoche College and Illinios College.
