HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College sophomore Angela Shaffer (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) displayed her versatility by placing first in her heptathlon debut and setting the new school record at the Messiah Invitational, making her the Landmark Conference Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 10, 2011.

Shaffer gained 3,510 points in the event, breaking 2002 record of 3,427 set by Kira Troutman. She narrowly missed the Landmark Conference record.

Her best events in the race were the 100m hurdles (16.09) and the high jump at (5-1), then the 200m dash (29.20), 800m dash (2:47.88), and the long jump (15-0.75). Her weakest performances were the shot put (26-5.75) and javelin (58-6).

She placed first or second in three of the seven events that Saturday. Shaffer's record in the heptathlon is her third school record, and she is ranked top-five-all-time in five other individual events.

The Juniata track and field teams competed against some eighteen teams yesterday in the Messiah Invitational. The men finished sixth and the women finished seventh. Included among the Juniata performances were five that ranked among the college's top-five all-time.

The rest of the Juniata men's and women's track and field teams will be traveling to Grantham on Saturday to compete in the remainder of the Messiah Invitational.
