Juniata Field Hockey Team Earns Postseason Berth
(Posted November 12, 2002)
Huntingdon, PA - The Juniata College (13-7) field hockey team will get a chance to continue what had already been a record-breaking season as the Eagles have earned a berth in the ECAC field hockey tournament. Juniata, seeded fourth in the tournament, will take on Montclair State (11-5) on Wednesday at Montclair State. The game will be played at 7:00 p.m. Juniata topped Montclair State 1-0 in the Eagle's regular-season finale. If the Eagles can find a way to top Montclair, the Eagles will then take-on the winner of the William Smith-RPI quarterfinal match in the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be held Saturday, with the Championship match taking place on Sunday. William Smith is the number-one seed in the tournament.
The 2002 season has already seen the blue and gold set several program records. Juniata finished the regular season with a record of 13-7. The team's 13 wins broke the existing program record of 12 wins in a season, which was set in 1988 and then equaled in 1996. The team also broke the record for goals in a game, when the Eagles knocked in 14 goals in a 14-0 victory over Washington and Jefferson. The previous high for goals in a game was 12. The season also featured a five-game winning streak, which tied for the longest in the program's history.
There were also noteworthy individual performances for the Eagles during the regular season. Billie Rickenbaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville) recorded 25 points (7 goals, 11 assists) on the season. That total represents the eighth-highest single-season total in the history of the Juniata field hockey program. Rickenbaugh's 11 assists are the second-highest season total in the College Hill record book. Eagles Marie Lobaugh (Biglerville/Aspers) and Jean Silvey (Red Lion/Airville) were each honored as the Commonwealth Conference field hockey "player of the week" during the season.
