NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Juniata College women's volleyball got plenty of offense, but couldn't quite match the output of host and sixth-ranked Christopher Newport University as Juniata fell to the Captains, 3-1, in Friday night's opening round of the CNU Invitational.

Set scores for Christopher Newport were 32-30, 23-25, 25-23, and 25-23.

Sophomore Courtney Lydick (McKean, Pa./General McLane) led 11th-ranked Juniata (14-5) with 21 kills to go with four total blocks, while sophomore pin hitter Amy Miller (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) logged 11 kills and four service aces in a match played just across the James River from her home.

Junior Kelsey Fuller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and senior Amanda Schmidt (Boswell, Pa./North Star) each had 10 kills, with Schmidt also serving up a pair of aces. Freshman Amelia Kepler (Kane, Pa./Kane) and sophomore Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) each had a hand on a pair of blocks. Greenberg also had 50 assists while guiding a Juniata offense that hit .122 for the match.

Defensively, senior Libby Morrison (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) sprawled for 32 digs.

Christopher Newport (19-3) was led by Chelsea McClure with 11 kills while Bailey Jensen put away 10 terminations. The Captains earned a total of 51 points on Juniata attack errors and service errors.

"We were good at times, and other times we weren't," said Juniata head coach Heather Pavlik. "We're just not finishing well right now and we've got to get better at that."

Juniata returns to action on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. match against the University of Mary Washington, with Salisbury University awaiting in a 2:00 p.m. match.
