Juniata Concert Band will Perform Classic Classical Numbers

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Concert Band will perform a mix of classical "hits" and excerpts from "Les Miserables," one of the most popular stage musicals in history, at the band's concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 14 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.
Admission to the concert is $5. All students under age 18 are admitted free, as are Juniata students with ID. The percussion ensembles are directed by James Latten, associate professor of music at Juniata.
The concert will open with "Cave," by Russell Peck, an American composer. The piece is meant to suggest a deep cave where the inhabitants have lost the ability to see. The next selection is "How Firm Thy Foundation," by James Swearingen, professor of music at Capital University and a staff arranger for the Ohio State University Marching Band.
The classical piece, "Concertpiece No. 2," by Felix Mendelssohn, will follow. The piece features solos by clarinetists Janet Berlin, instructor of music at Juniata, and Judy Burke, a community member from Huntingdon, Pa.
The next selection is a classical "classic" composed by Gioacchino Rossini, a 19th century Italian opera composer, called the "William Tell Overture." The overture is better known to baby boomers as the theme to "The Lone Ranger" radio and television shows.
The ensemble will perform "Foundry," by John Mackey, a contemporary American composer. The piece uses "found percussion" such as salad bowls and pieces of wood to replicate the sound of a steel mill or foundry.
The concert will close with "Highlights from 'Les Miserables,'" arranged by Warren Barker. "Les Miserables" is one of the most popular stage musicals of the last 50 years and last year's filmed version of the play was nominated for an Academy Award.
