Huntingdon Native to Perform Solo Piano at Wind Symphony Concert
(Posted April 15, 2013)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Wind Symphony will feature a Huntingdon native as guest pianist and debut a new Juniata College and community music ensemble at its spring concert at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 27, in Rosenberger Auditorium on the Juniata campus.
Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and Juniata students with ID or children under 18 are admitted free. The Wind Symphony is directed by James Latten, associate professor of music at Juniata.
The ensemble will step aside for a performance by Robert Swan, a 1964 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School and a renowned instrumental soloist for the International Baldwin Artist Roster, who will play "Piano Concerto in A Minor," by Edvard Grieg.
The concert opens with "Illyrian Dances," by Guy Woolfenden, a present-day English composer noted for his work in opera, film and television. There are three movements in the "Illyrian" piece.
Next the ensemble will perform "Blue Shades," by American composer Frank Ticheli, which melds jazz and blues into a contemporary composition. The wind symphony will take on the music of German composer Richard Wagner next by performing "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral," which comes from the opera "Lohengrin." Wagner, a 19th century composer, is best known for his operas and the composition "Ride of the Valkyries."
The ensemble will step aside for a performance by Robert Swan, a 1964 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School and a renowned instrumental soloist for the International Baldwin Artist Roster, who will play "Piano Concerto in A Minor," by Edvard Grieg. It is the only concerto Grieg completed and it can be heard in films and television, including the program "Twin Peaks."
After making his first orchestral debut as a teenager with the Juniata College Symphony, Swan earned degrees in music from the Eastman School of Music and the Julliard School. He went on to earn a doctorate in music from the University of Arizona. As a piano soloist he has performed with major orchestras and given solo performances at Lincoln Center in New York City and the White House. He is an adjunct professor of music at Seattle Pacific University and at Music Works Northwest, in Bellevue, Wash.
After Swan's performance, the ensemble will perform "Colonel Bogey March," a British military march used memorably in the classic film "Bridge on the River Kwai."
After intermission, the college musicians will display their talents in a new ensemble, the Raystown Wind Orchestra. The group will start its debut by playing "Noisy Wheels of Joy," by Eric Whitacre, a piece inspired by the Disney film "101 Dalmatians."
The wind orchestra will perform three selections from "Lincolnshire Posey" by Percy Grainger. The piece has six movements, each inspired by an English folk song. The Juniata group will play "Dublin Bay," "Horkstow Grange" and "The Lost Lady Found."
The concert will end with "American Salute," by Morton Gould, a Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer who based the tune on the song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again."
