HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Concert Band will provide a musical tribute to several nationally historical moments in its fall concert at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 17, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and Juniata students with ID or children under 18 are admitted free. The Concert Band is directed by James Latten, professor of music at Juniata.

The concert will open with "Overture in B Flat," written by Caesar Giovannini and Wayne Robinson. Giovannini is best known for his work on the film scores for the 1970s films "Soylent Green" and "Planet of the Apes." "Overture" is a staple for concert bands.

To honor the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the band will play "Gettysburg," written by Randy Edelman. The composition is part of the soundtrack for the 1993 film "Gettysburg." Edelman's film scores include "The Mask" and other film and television projects.

The next 19th century selection is "Chorale and Shaker Dance," written by John Zdechlik. The modern composition is based on the classic Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts."

The ensemble will transition to "Big Band Dixie," in which arranger Bob Lowden, has strung together classic sections of 19th century and early 20th century Dixieland jazz.

The 19th-century theme continues as the ensemble performs "Shenandoah," by nationally respected composer Frank Ticheli. The composition is based on a folk song of the same name.

The concert will draw to a close with "recessional," the triumphal march from "Aida," by Guiseppe Verdi. In keeping with the band's anniversary theme, the selection is performed in honor of the 200th anniversary of Verdi's birth.
