HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Concert Band will tackle a composition by Gustav Holst, "First Suite for Band," at its fall concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, and Juniata students with ID or children under 18 are admitted free. The Concert Band is directed by James Latten, professor of music at Juniata.

The concert will open with "First Suite for Band," by Holst, a composer best known for his orchestral suite "The Planets." Holst, a native of Gloucester, England, composed music for a variety of ensembles while maintaining a career as a teacher at English schools and universities.

"First Suite" has three movements, "Chaconne," "Intermezzo" and "March."

The next selection, "On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss," is by American composer David Holsinger, currently a music professor at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. The song is based on the American hymn "It is Well with My Soul" and is often performed at memorial services, including the memorial for the Challenger astronauts.

The program transitions to "The Blue and the Gray," by Clare Grundman, which is often subtitled "The Civil War Suite." The composition references many famous Civil War songs, including "Kingdom Coming," "Marching Through Georgia," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," "Battle Cry of Freedom" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

Next, the ensemble will play "Pleasantries for the Band," by Joe Kerestan, a State College, Pa.-based songwriter and composer.

The concert ends with a performance of "Pirates of the Caribbean," by Klaus Badelt, a contemporary composer know for his collaborations with film score composer Hans Zimmer. Badelt is known for his scores for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl," "Rescue Dawn" and "Poseidon."
