HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Concert Band will explore movie music ranging from ragtime to tunes from Middle Earth in its operformance at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 18, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.

Tickets are $5 for adults and free for those under age 18 or Juniata students with ID. The Concert Band is directed by James Latten, professor of music at Juniata College.

The Concert will open with "Symphony of Souls," by Robert W. Smith, which musically depicts the Black Hawk Indian battle of Bad Axe in four movements. The band will then play "October," by Eric Whitacre, who characterizes the piece as inspired by autumn.

Next the band will perform "The Music of Jerry Goldsmith," which is a medley of film themes writen by the famed soundtrack composer. The medley includes "Arthur's Fanfare," from "First Knight," "The Parachutes," from "Air Force One," "Title Theme," from "Rudy" and "Main Theme" from "Star Trek."

The next selection will be "The Machine Awakes," by Steven Bryant. The song musically recalls the startup of a new machine. In addition to instruments, a computer is used to perform the song. From futuristic tunes to turn-of-the-century jazz characterizes the transition to "The Entertainer," by famed ragtime composer Scott Joplin. (Joplin's music was used to score the film "The Sting.")

Another, more recent movie is referenced in the next selection, "Concert Medley" from "The Lord of the Rings" films. The music is written by film scorer Howard Shore.

The ensembles final piece is "Cajun Folk Songs," by acclaimed marching band composer Frank Ticheli, who used the folksongs "La Belle Et Le Capitaine" and "Belle" for inspiration.
