HUNTINGDON, Pa. — In honor of Black History Month, the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Campus Ministry at Juniata College will host a performance of “Partners in Life” at 7 p.m. Monday, February 26, in the Susan von Liebig Black Box Theater in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts.

“This story explores love in a time when it was illegal to love out loud a person based on their race. How recent this history is!,” said Derek A. James, dean of equity, diversity, and inclusion. “We look forward to learning about Louis and Louisa and we are thankful for Michael and Karen Watt for bringing this story to us.”

This drama recounts the experiences of Louis and Louisa Gregory, an interracial Bahá’í couple living in the United States during the early 20th century—an era in which interracial marriage was a criminal offense in 25 states. As members of the Bahá’í faith, which emphasizes the oneness of humanity and the elimination of prejudice, the Gregories received support and encouragement to disregard social convention.

Based on “To Move the World,” a biography of Louis Gregory by Gail Morrison, “Partners in Life” is performed by Michael and Karen Watt of Altoona, Pa., who, like the historical figures they reenact, are an interracial Bahá’í couple themselves. Karen Watt adapted the biography to the stage. The couple has shared this production around the nation.

This event is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow the performance.
