Using Trauma-Informed Approaches as Universal

When:

April 20, 2023

This training will provide foundational knowledge about how psychological trauma and adversity may impact the health and well-being of individuals within various systems of care. As individuals and agencies continue to navigate their work in the context of many stressors and the lasting impact of the pandemic, it is critical to recognize the stress and secondary stress reactions of ourselves and others. Trauma-informed approaches provide an opportunity to recognize the impact of stress and trauma on individuals, while responding in ways that “neutralize the environment” for possible re-traumatization. An overview of the trauma-informed framework will be provided. Participants also will learn how trauma-informed values can inform strategies for responding to self and others in ways that promote regulation, connection, and capacity for healing and success.

The training will:

  • Provide an overview of trauma/adversity and its impact—specifically on the brain and how it impacts the “here and now” interactions.
  • Acknowledge the various challenges and stressors that contextualize the work.
  • Discuss the relationship between trauma, adversity and behavior/health.
  • Discuss strategies to prevent trauma responses and ways to avoid re-traumatization within participant roles and settings.
  • Operationalize trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive approaches and how participants can utilize the 5 guiding values/principles of trauma-informed approaches in their roles with those they work with.
  • Address the impact of the work on self and others (i.e., vicarious trauma, burnout) and workforce wellness. The training will be both educational and interactive in nature, and handouts/materials will be provided to participants."
