Juniata is committed to the safety of its students and employees, both on and off-campus. Many vital functions of the college involve off-campus travel, and the following guidelines have been established to facilitate communication and promote personal safety.  College-sanctioned travel includes travel:

  • by a department or student organization for professional or educational purposes,
  • by employees serving in their official capacity, or
  • funded using departmental or organizational resources.

All Affiliated International Travel

All trip leaders must contact the Dean of the Center for International Education (CIE) at studyabroad@juniata.edu to discuss purpose and site(s) of travel. Juniata College reserves the right to restrict affiliated group or individual travel abroad through the college based on the restricted regions list and other safety concerns

General Requirements

All group members wishing to participate in travel abroad through Juniata College must sign Statement of Understanding and Acknowledgment of Risk forms prior to departure. The forms will be provided as part of pre-departure orientation process through the Center for International Education. 

Insurance Requirement for All Groups Traveling Abroad

Students and any accompanying faculty and staff traveling abroad on behalf of Juniata College on approved study abroad program or through support of the college will be automatically enrolled in a Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) insurance plan. This is a plan specific to Juniata students and covers a variety of issues such as medical treatment, emergency evacuation, travel delay, and more. The cost of the plan is $43 per month and will be automatically billed to the student as part of the fees for students abroad.

Credit-bearing Travel Requirements

Faculty/staff leaders must submit an initial or renewal proposal each year for courses abroad. This information can be found at the Faculty Resources page.

Students will be required to submit an application via the study abroad portal. Once an application is created within Terra Dotta, students will need to submit various forms and to go through processes related to pre-departure orientation, including watching a series of videos on health and safety.

Faculty/staff leaders must complete a travel safety workshop / training session before leading a student group off-campus.

Group Travel Abroad, Not for Credit

Non-credit Group Travel Abroad Requirements

Any group participating in travel abroad affiliated with Juniata must coordinate with the Center for International Education (CIE) concerning the following processes. 

Faculty/staff leaders must consult with the Dean of International Education. 

Students will be required to submit an application via the study abroad portal. Once an application is created within Terra Dotta, students will need to submit various forms and to go through processes related to predeparture orientation, including watching a series of videos on health and safety. 

Faculty/staff leaders must complete a travel safety workshop / training session before leading a student group off campus.

Registered Student Organizations Abroad

Requirements for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) Traveling Internationally

All Registered Student Organization-related international travel must first be approved by a committee, consisting of members from the Office of Student Activities, the Center for International Education (CIE), the Dean of Students, a representative of the Safety Committee, and, ultimately, the Provost. Travel to any of the sites listed on the US State Department Travel Advisory List is subject to further review by the abovementioned parties.

Any Juniata College Registered Student Organization wishing to participate in travel abroad through the College must first complete a Registered Student Organization Abroad Initial Proposal and budget, and submit both to the CIE at studyabroad@juniata.edu no later than April 15 for fall semester travel, and November 15 for spring and summer travel. 

Registered Student Organization members traveling abroad must be accompanied by no fewer than one Juniata College staff or faculty member per ten student participants. 

In addition, all travel leaders must complete a Safety and Security training session and a Health and Safety Abroad session through the CIE prior to departure. These can be scheduled by emailing studyabroad@juniata.edu at least one month in advance of the travel date. 

Students will be required to submit an application via the study abroad portal. Once an application is created within Terra Dotta, students will need to submit various forms and to go through processes related to predeparture orientation, including watching a series of videos on health and safety. 

Failure to comply with these policies can result in the loss of funding and active status for the Registered Student Organization in question.

Individual, College-Supported Student Travel Abroad

Requirements for Individual Student Travel Abroad with College Support

All individual student international travel which is funded through the college (International Studies Fellowships, Super Internships) must first be approved by the Center for International Education (CIE), the Dean of Students, a representative of the Safety Committee, and, ultimately, the Provost.  Juniata College reserves the right to restrict affiliated group or individual travel abroad through the college based on the restricted regions list and other safety concerns.

The proposal for funding for any individual student who plans to participate in international travel which is funded through the college (International Studies Fellowships, Super Internships) must be submitted to the CIE at studyabroad@juniata.edu no later than March 1 for summer travel.

In addition, any individual student who is approved to participate in international travel which is funded through the college (International Studies Fellowships, Super Internships) must complete a Safety and Security training session and a Health and Safety Abroad session through the CIE prior to departure. These can be scheduled by emailing studyabroad@juniata.edu at least 3 weeks in advance of the travel date.

Participants must sign and submit the Juniata College Statement of Understanding and Acknowledgment of Risks forms. 

Failure to comply with this policy can result in the loss of funding.
