Creation in Babylon
Bob Miller, Ph.D., Rosenberger Professor of Christian & Religious Studies
Location TBA
The first chapter of the Bible, with its story of creation in six days, is usually
regarded as a quaint but scientifically preposterous account. However, it was written
in Babylon, at a time when Israel’s religion was in danger of becoming extinct. If
we appreciate this story in its own historical context, we can see that it is a bold
and sophisticated attempt to restore faith in the God of Israel.
Science in Motion—Strawberry DNA Extraction
Leslie Leckvarcik, Ph.D. Director of Science Outreach Department
Location TBA
Join us for a popular Science in Motion Outreach Program classroom activity: Strawberry
DNA Extraction! Discover that all living cells contain DNA—the molecule that stores
genetic instructions for building proteins and controlling traits. In humans and many
organisms, DNA is packaged into chromosomes within the nucleus of each cell. Participants
will extract DNA from strawberries using a simple, hands-on method with common household
items that break open cell membranes and release DNA. This activity reinforces key
concepts of cell structure, the roles of membranes and nuclei, and why DNA is the
hereditary molecule. Participants will observe the extracted DNA with both the naked
eye and under a microscope.
Gather with classmates for some light bites before attending the Juniata Then and Now Alumni College session, hosted by your classmates.

has changed and what has remained the same over the past 50 years at Juniata. This
will be an interactive session so bring your questions and favorite memories. Whether
you are celebrating your own reunion milestone or reflecting in honor of Juniata’s
150th anniversary, all are welcome!
A Brief History of Comic Books and American Culture
Scott Beatty ’91
Location TBA
Emerging from the Great Depression, American comic books evolved from four-color escapist
fiction to Hollywood dominance. For nearly 100 years, characters drawn from the very
earliest heroic archetypes have battled economics, censorship, and readers’ changing
interests to inspire and instill hope in times of hopelessness within the pages of
our favorite funnies, comic books, and graphic novels.

Bob Miller, Ph.D., Rosenberger Professor of Christian & Religious Studies
