Juniata College is a residential campus and, with a limited number of exceptions, all students are expected to live in college-owned facilities. However, the College recognizes that living in non-campus housing provides a valuable experience and can help students prepare for independent living in the "real world." A limited number of students from the senior class will be granted permission to live off campus while taking into consideration the impact this has on the Huntingdon community and Juniata College. The number of students permitted to live in non-campus housing is based upon many factors including the size of the incoming freshman class, a five year average of upper-class student persistence, and the College's desire to maintain full occupancy of rooms available on-campus.
The following will detail the procedure that has been created through the collaboration between Student Government and the Juniata Administration. This procedure will be used to determine which seniors will be granted permission to live in non-campus housing in a given year. Permission will be granted to a pre-determined number of students ranked by GPA.
Applying for permission to live in non-campus housing does not guarantee that permission will be granted. Students who do not receive permission to live in non-campus housing will be assigned to and billed for on-campus housing. Students are not permitted to move to non-campus housing during the academic year. DO NOT sign a lease prior to obtaining approval.
Who can register for permission to live in non-campus housing?
All students who currently hold junior status as of the spring semester will have the opportunity to register for permission to live in non-campus housing. Students who currently have freshmen or sophomore status will not be considered for permission to live in non-campus housing. However, not all qualified students that register will be granted permission to live in non-campus housing due to Juniata College’s mission to be a residential campus.
Exceptions will be granted to:
- PAR students
- Traditional-aged students living within 50 miles of Juniata College and residing at the home of their parents or appointed legal guardian
- Students who are married
- Students who are raising a child
- Students who have already been granted permission to live in non-campus housing during previous year(s)
Students who fall in the above mentioned categories should notify Residential Life of their circumstances and will be granted permission by the end of February.
How do I register to be considered for permission to live in non-campus housing?
Qualified students will have access to the Non-Campus Release Request page during the specified time frame. A link to this webpage will be available on the Juniata College Residential Life website.
On this page you will be asked to submit your name and ID number. As soon as you have filled out the necessary information and click submit, your application will be automatically forwarded to the Office of Residence Life and entered into a numbered list. This system is based on GPA, and is consistent with the Room Draw Process. Residential Life will grant permission to live in non-campus housing to the pre-determined number of students.
When can I register?
At the beginning of February, rising senior students will have access to the Non-Campus Release Request page (the link to this page is listed above).
When will I be notified of the results?
Students will be notified of the results of the registration process by the end of February. Those students who fall into the pre-determined number should notify the Office of Residential Life if they are accepting their permission or would like to deny it and go through campus room draw. Students who do not fall into the appointed number will be place on a wait list. The students on the wait list will be notified if and when they are granted non-campus permission.
What about students who are currently studying abroad?
This same system applies to students who are studying abroad. Students will notify Residential Life of their intention to live in non-campus housing, within the specified time period and be placed on the list according to their GPA.
Will groups be able to register together?
No, students will register as individuals and be granted permission to live in non-campus housing only as individuals. Groups of possible roommates must each register individually. If some members of a possible grouping receive permission and the others do not, the group is faced with two decisions: live with different people or look for on-campus housing. As students who have been tentatively released choose to remain on-campus, those students on the wait list will move up the list into the released group and have the opportunity to live in non-campus housing.
