The History and Art History Department wants students to develop the ability to think historically. Studying abroad offers the opportunity for students to increase their knowledge of different cultures and their understanding of how people in different times and places viewed themselves. What better experiential learning could a historian enjoy short of time travel itself?
Students need to take a sophomore seminar and write a senior thesis at Juniata, so the best time to study abroad is the junior year. History is among the most flexible programs in which to study abroad, especially if a student’s language skills allow primary research. Nearly any history course can be counted toward the POE at Juniata. Specifically this means that courses meeting the requirements for 100/200 level courses and 300/400 level courses can be taken abroad.
Year 1
- Inform your academic advisor of your intent to study abroad
- Attend the study abroad fair in the Fall Semester
- Consider enrolling in a foreign language
Year 2
- Consider living in a Global Village language residence
- Consider having an international roommate
Year 3
- For English language study, our students are well served at Lincoln, Leeds, York, Prague, Cork, and Hamilton. The language programs in France, Germany, and Ecuador also offer exciting opportunities for HAH Department students
