Baker Institute World Affairs Lectures (1975)

The World Affairs Lecture Series brings to campus internationally known policy makers, scholars, activists, soldiers, and diplomats to discuss current issues related to war and peace. The series is organized and funded by the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies. It began as an in-house luncheon series with presentations prepared by Juniata faculty.

Beachley Distinguished Professor Awards

The Beachley awards were created to support two faculty awards: The Beachley Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Beachley Award for Distinguished Academic Service. The awards were established by the late Donovan R. Beachley, Sr., a 1921 graduate of Juniata and member of the board of trustees; the late Mrs. Grace Rinehart Beachley; Donovan R. Beachley, Jr., a member of the class of 1947 and an emeritus member of the board of trustees; and Mrs. Mary Ellen Beachley, all of Hagerstown, Md. Additional support for the awards is provided by Donovan R. Beachley, Jr., and by David C. Beachley, a 1977 Juniata graduate, member of the board of trustees, and current president of the Beachley Furniture Co. of Hagerstown.

Bookend Seminar

Provost Robert Halata '52 instituted the Bookend Seminar at Juniata in the fall of 1996. Its original purpose was to provide a forum for faculty members to report on their sabbatical research and projects. One lecture was held each semester. The Bookend Seminar continues to be sponsored by the Provost's Office and has evolved into a monthly forum with topics ranging far beyond sabbatical projects.

Calvert N. Ellis Memorial Lectureship (1997)

In memory of Dr. Calvert N. Ellis '23, the sixth president of Juniata College, family and friends have established this endowment to annually bring to campus renowned lecturers in philosophy and education. It is intended that these lecturers will be scheduled so that the entire Juniata community has the opportunity to share in the experience.

The Henry H. '57 and Joan R. Gibbel Award for Teaching Excellence (formerly titled the Beachley Award for Distinguished Performance)

(by a faculty member with less than six years of service)

This award is presented to a tenure-track faculty member that has taught at Juniata for six years or fewer. The award is presented to an exemplary faculty member who excels in teaching and scholarship and who has made a notable contribution to the academic program.

The Gibbel family is well known to the Juniata community. Henry Gibbel's grandfather, father, and son each graduated from Juniata. Henry, his father, and grandfather served on the College's board of trustees, and all three were named chair of the board during their tenures. Gibbel has served as a trustee since 1973 and was board chair from 2001 to 2006. He is president and chief executive officer of Lititz Mutual Insurance Company and is president, chief executive officer, and director of Penn Charter Mutual Insurance Co., Farmer's and Mechanics' Mutual Insurance Co., Livingston Mutual Insurance Co., and president of Excess Reinsurance Co. Henry and his wife Joan reside in Lititz, PA.

Will Judy Lectureship Fund (1958)

The Will Judy Lectureship provides for an annual series of lectures to supplement and enrich the academic program of the College. It was established by Captain Will Judy '11, of Chicago. Each year, the lectureship brings to campus leaders in government, education, the arts, natural science, business, or other areas of interest to the College community.

Edwin A. & Susan R. Malloy Lectureship Fund (1985)

This lectureship endowment was created by Edwin A. and Susan Rabinowitz Malloy to enhance the quality of life at the College and in the Huntingdon community. Annual income from the endowment shall bring to the campus persons, organizations, and activities from outside the Juniata—Huntingdon sphere. For example, selected programs might include (though are not limited to) nationally or internationally known speakers, artists, writers, and musical groups.

The Delbert McQuade Distinguished Lectureship in History (1997)

An endowed history lectureship in memory of Delbert J. McQuaide '58 was established in 1997 with a major gift from the law firm of McQuaide, Blasko, Schwartz, Fleming & Faulkner, as well as gifts from other colleagues and friends. After receiving his B.A. from Juniata, Delbert McQuaide received a Root-Tilden Scholarship, awarded to those who "show unusual capacity for unselfish public leadership." With this scholarship, he went on to receive his LLB from New York University School of Law. Having served the College for years in various capacities, Mr. McQuaide was elected to Juniata's board of trustees in 1994 and chaired the board from 1996 until his death in 1997. The endowment is intended to support a lectureship in history because of Mr. McQuaide's admiration of former Juniata history professor Dr. Kenneth Crosby, and his devotion to history.

Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows Program

This program was established to serve as a connection between the liberal education and the world beyond the campus by bringing thoughtful and successful practitioners to colleges for a week of classes and informal discussions with students and faculty. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation has developed and conducted programs in higher education since 1945.
