Primary Role

The Programmer/Analyst in Administrative Information Services (A.I.S.) supports campus-wide information needs by assisting with access to core data in a variety of forms; by helping administrative staff, students, and faculty to use and understand central data; and by supporting Juniata's ERP and related administrative systems and applications.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Become the AIS expert in particular functional areas of the college and/or with particular application tools, in order to assist users with application questions, procedures, and general problem solving. Give guidance on best practices for business processes and how they relate to our ERP and other campus information systems.
  • Create or modify reports, data extracts, uploads and downloads to Microsoft Office products and Juniata's website. Be familiar with SQL-based reporting tools for interactions with other databases. Write queries, programs, subroutines, screen procedures, and custom data dictionary elements and data files, using Datatel’s UniQuery, Unibasic, and Envision reporting and programming tools.
  • Support conversion and other projects in meetings with users and AIS/ITLS colleagues, analysis, and reporting of processes, needs, and scope.
  • Assist end users in developing their own reports using Query Builder, MS Office or SQL based reporting tools; help identify appropriate data elements and allow for integration with other college applications. Assist in using administrative systems effectively, and in defining data and processing needs.
  • Create custom forms such as checks and transcripts and solve printing/connectivity problems.
  • Availability at times other than normal work hours for emergencies and helping to cover regular events such as registration or orientation.

Supervision Required/Given

Programmer/Analysts are supervised by the Associate Director of Administrative Information Services. They may on occasion supervise students or temporary employees.

Position Qualifications

  • General programming/IT knowledge and abilities normally acquired through a Bachelor’s Degree in information technology, computer science, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of large relational databases, application programming, and Microsoft Office required, as well as experience with data privacy and security issues.
  • Ability to train and work well with people of widely varying technical skills, and to function as a team member, required.
  • Familiarity with the Datatel ERP, Unidata and SQL-based reporting tools, UniBasic programming, internet/browser technologies, Unix, and Windows preferred.
  • Previous employment experience in higher education preferred; other experience with non-profit organizations or with data and programming in support of mission critical business functions may be substituted.
