Assistant Professor of Social Work/BSW Field Director
The Department of Social Work and Sociology at Juniata College, a highly ranked, national liberal arts college of 1,400 students located in the scenic Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania, seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor of Social Work position in a two person, CSWE accredited program, beginning August 2020. This position includes the designation of BSW Field Director, and is ideal for the person who is interested in both field education and the opportunity to teach a variety of courses in social work. This is a one-year fixed-term position with the opportunity for renewal. The Department of Social Work has been accredited by CSWE since 1984, and typically graduates 6-7 students per year. The BSW Field Director is responsible for directing all aspects of the BSW field education program, including:
•identifying, developing and evaluating field education opportunities in Huntingdon and surrounding counties;
•monitoring and evaluating field education sites;
•matching students with field practicums;
•developing and conducting field orientations for students and field instructors;
•educating field instructors and field practicum agencies on the mission and goals of the BSW program, as well as the BSW core competencies as established by CSWE in the 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS);
•coordinating, planning and facilitating semi-annual meetings of the Social Work Advisory Committee;
•providing educational supervision to senior BSW students enrolled in our capstone Professional Semester;
•collaborating with the BSW Program Director in teaching the Professional Semester Research Seminar;
•encouraging and facilitating on-going communication between the students, field instructors and the program;
•and developing and implementing policies and procedures related to the field program.
The successful candidate must have:
•an MSW from a CSWE accredited program;
•a Ph.D. in social work or related field in addition to the MSW preferred;
•a minimum of 2 years post-Master’s social work experience;
•an LSW or LCSW, and be eligible for licensing in Pennsylvania;
•a minimum of two years college teaching experience, preferably in a BSW or MSW program;
•a minimum of one year of relevant and successful administrative/leadership experience, such as a program coordinator or clinical supervisor in a social agency; or agency director;
•A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion demonstrated by any of the following:
o Inclusive pedagogy and classroom practices;
o Experience supporting diverse learners and those marginalized, under-represented or under-resourced in higher education environments;
o Research interests that explore or further equity initiatives and outcomes.
Knowledge of baccalaureate social work education and the accreditation standards (EPAS) for the BSW highly desirable. Experience as a field instructor for BSW students or an agency supervisor a plus. Interest and skills for the development of online/hybrid social work courses a plus. The BSW Field Director will teach five courses per academic year including the Professional Semester and the Professional Semester Research Seminar. Of particular interest are candidates who have social work teaching experience in generalist social work practice; social problems and social welfare; social work practice with large groups, organizations and communities; social welfare policy; human behavior in the social environment; statistics for the social sciences; and research.
